REMINGTON MANUFACTURED US M1903 "MODIFIED" RIFLE Caliber .30-06
A close-up of the right side. The Modified rifle was termed such because several changes from the original M1903 rifle were made to speed up production and cut costs. This early version of the Modified rifle has a stock with two reinforcing bolts. Later production had two brass pins. The "finger grooves" in the forestock were eliminated as one of the modifications.
Left side. As you can see, the "lightening cuts" or milled grooves on the rear sight base were eliminated.
Each rifle was given an acceptance stamp on the stock, after completion. "RLB" and the round Ordinance Acceptance Cartouche appear on this specimen. The top, front of the barrel will have the date, "RA" and the Flaming Bomb.
The earliest Remington Modified rifles retained the milled barrel bands and sling swivels of the World War1 M1903 rifle.
The Remington Modified rifles will typically have a mixture of Parkerized and blued parts. This rifle's bolt and trigger are blued. All parts are marked "R", for Remington. Further changes included a stamped trigger guard, barrel bands, and sling swivels. The final modification moved the rear sight from the barrel to the receiver bridge. After this, the rifle was given a new designation- "Rifle, U.S. M1903A3"
